Foreign Policy Objectives

The foreign policy objectives of the Grand Duchy of Greifenberg are the same as those of most other nations of the world: to protect the country’s sovereignty, independence and security and to advance its political and economic interests. Greifenberg’s longer term diplomatic objective is acceptance of our nation internationally as a sovereign and independent state. The Government of the Grand Duchy of Greifenberg pursues these objectives at both the bilateral and multilateral level.

A Tiny Duchy with a Grand Design

As a result of its relatively small size, the Grand Duchy of Greifenberg exercises  relatively little political influence in the world – a characteristic that it shares with all micronations. Consequently, Greifenberg has a strong interest in the preservation of peace, the rule of international law and the observance of treaties.

HRH Grand Duke Paul recognizes that sovereignty is a concept that has constantly to be asserted in a practical and realistic fashion so that small nations such as the Grand Duchy of Greifenberg are not brushed aside by larger states. Therefore, Greifenberg exercises and safeguards its sovereignty through political and economic involvement with others. The Government operates in the intermicronational foreign policy arena with a wide range of partners in carefully defined treaty relationships, in order that the rights and identity of the Grand Duchy of Greifenberg will be respected and its room for maneuver assured.

Although a small nation, the Government consistently pursues an agenda that focuses on making the Grand Duchy of Greifenberg as fit as possible for the future, in order to seize opportunities when they arise. In his Speech from the Throne on 27 October 2005, HRH Grand Duke Paul stated that: “The preservation and cultivation of the Greifenberg national identity requires special attention if it is to grow and mature in the future. To this end, Greifenberg must show itself to be a sensible, constructive and reliable partner in any endeavor it undertakes.” This statement, perhaps more than any other, characterizes the present foreign policy of the Grand Duchy of Greifenberg.
